LUDHIANA: The department of agricultural meteorology at Punjab Agricultural University has asserted that there is no drought like situation at least in the city as it has already received 678.3 mm of rainfall against the normal of 580 mm.
Interestingly, the city has received this amount of rainfall in mere three months; June, July and August. According to meteorologists, monsoon period ranges from June to September, the figure 580 mm pertains to rainfall received in these four seasons.
In September, the rainfall received during the entire month has reached 76.6 mm, with city receiving intermittent showers on Sunday and Monday. The meteorological observatory at PAU recorded a rainfall of 33.6 mm on these two days.
Dr GS Bains, head, department of agricultural meteorology at PAU informed, Definitely we have received very good rainfall in city. However, he too admitted that some isolated pockets in state had received very less rain.
The monsoons have been erratic this season, commented Dr Bains on the behaviour of monsoons. He added that they have received reports about few areas where there is an acute shortage of rainfall.
Dr Bains informed that the city had received 110.6 mm rainfall in June, 491.1 mm in July and 76.6 mm in August. The rainfalls surely are expected to replenish the water table at places where there have been in abundance, said Bains. He recalled that even last year, city had received above normal rainfall.
Forecasting weather for the coming few days, Weatherman Dr Bains said, In city, we would have more rains on Tuesday.
